Dr. Scheid and XLIF on WNYT w/Benita Zahn
Date: Apr 13, 2010
Dr. Edward H. Scheid Jr., M.D., a neurosurgeon at Capital Region Neurosurgery offers a minimally invasive procedure, called XLIF®, Lateral Interbody Fusion, differs from traditional spinal surgery. The surgery is performed through the side of the body, which eliminates the disruption of muscles, bones, and ligaments that result from the traditional posterior (back) approach. The results are dramatic reducing the patient’s hospital stay and recovery period by greater than 50 percent.
An estimated 10 million adults suffer from chronic back and/or leg pain annually, a condition that can limit their activities. Until recently, adults with back and/or leg pain have undergone traditional or “open” spine surgery, requiring weeks or months of recovery.
“This approach is less disruptive to tissues, decreases blood loss, markedly decreases pain and lessens the hospital stay to 24 hours in most cases, whereas traditional fusions often require two to three days of hospitalization and significant blood loss,” explained Dr. Scheid. “Additionally, recovery time is shortened to about six weeks compared to the average six month recovery with traditional back surgery. XLIF is a major advance for neurosurgical care of spine diseases. ”
